Hard-Wired Smoke Alarm Installation

WA law requires hard-wired smoke alarms with battery backup in homes sold, rented, or built after specific dates. Our electricians run the wiring, interconnect the alarms, and certify the work.

Smoke Alarm Replacement

Smoke alarms expire 10 years from the manufacture date. If yours are older or showing signs of failure, we'll swap them for compliant photoelectric units on the same visit, where possible.

Types of Smoke Alarms We Install

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms

Photoelectric smoke alarms detect slow, smouldering fires (the type that start from couches, electrical faults, or smoking materials). These are the alarms WA law now requires in residential properties under most circumstances, and the type we recommend for nearly every Perth home.

Ionisation Smoke Alarms

Ionisation Smoke Alarms

Ionisation alarms respond faster to flaming fires but are being phased out of residential use. We supply them only where specifically required for commercial or industrial applications.

Dual-Sensor Smoke Alarms

Dual-sensor units combine photoelectric and ionisation detection in one device for properties needing coverage against both fire types. We’ll let you know if this suits your situation.

What Our Customers Say

FAQs

Yes. In Western Australia, residential smoke alarms must be hard-wired to mains power with a 9-volt battery backup. This applies to any home being sold, rented, or newly built. Installations must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786:2014 and be carried out by a licensed electrician.

No. Hard-wired smoke alarm installation in WA must be done by a licensed electrician. Battery-only alarms can be self-installed, but battery-only alarms don’t meet the compliance requirements for sale, rental, or new builds. Getting a licensed electrician to handle the install protects your insurance, your sale settlement, and your tenants.

Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10 years from the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit. Even if the alarm still beeps when tested, the sensor degrades over time and won’t reliably detect smoke past that mark. We can check your manufacture dates during any service call.

Smoke alarms must be installed in every hallway connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on each storey of the dwelling, even if no bedrooms are on that level. Single-storey homes without a hallway need an alarm in or near the sleeping area.

Cost depends on whether you need a straight replacement, a new hard-wired install, or alarms across multiple storeys. We quote a fixed price up front after a quick property review (no hidden hourly rates or surprise charges).

Yes. After every install, you receive a written compliance certificate confirming the work meets AS 3786 and WA Building Regulations. This is what your settlement agent, property manager, or insurer will ask for.
